The
most significant artists are often a study in contradictions, and that’s
certainly true of Blake Wise, a smoldering country talent who combines
plenty of familiar influences but doesn’t quite sound like anyone else.
He’s only now at the beginning of his career, attacking it with a youthful
exuberance. But that energy is tempered by a patience that mirrors the Wise
family name, a patience he acquired in six years of stop-and-go development
in Nashville’s music system.
Wise
admittedly needed seasoning, and he picked that up by opening for the likes
of Josh Turner, John Conlee, the Marshall Tucker Band and Confederate
Railroad. He also got familiar with the camera, modeling for a Wrangler ad
campaign. Despite the early attention, waiting for the right recording deal
helped mature the eager singer.
Now 21
and living in Music City, Wise has become a student of the music industry,
writing with such A-list songwriters as Ashley Gorley, Kerry Kurt Phillips
and Danny Wells, who’ve collectively penned hits for the likes of George
Strait, Trace Adkins and Tim McGraw. Wells is co-producing the singer’s
debut album with Mark Bright (Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts), with the
music showing both sides of Wise: the playful, charismatic entertainer is
evident in the sexy “Hot Enough To Cool Me Down,” while the consoling
philosopher is at work in the powerful ballad “They Don’t Know You.”
Those
contradictions—the youthful energy and seasoned experience, the fun-loving
entertainer and insightful balladeer—all fit comfortably in the person of
Blake Wise, an artist who truly owns his own distinct place.
